Spud Bed #2
Following on from the recent planting of ‘Spud Bed #1’ today I got the second bed of spuds in. Again with Desiree seed spuds, but also a few red supermarket spuds that sprouted a bit in the cupboard. [Show...
Spud Bed #1
Determined to do better on potatoes this year than last, which shouldn’t be too hard since I barely watered them last year and still got a bit of growth. I’m doing them in raised beds this year instead of the bags approach I tried last year, which should hold water better I hope, but still have adequate drainage. But sticking roughly with the ‘build-up-layers’ approach rather than digging them down. I have two...
Frog Pond Update: Water Lilies Arrival
Today’s big change in the new pond is the water lilies arrived. I’ve planted them up and they’re looking really good in the pond after settling in for a couple of hours. I was skeptical buying them on eBay, in bare-rooted form. But the price is so much better and I think they’re going to survive. At the local nursery they wanted $40 for a larger, established water lily in a pot. On eBay I got 10 (there were...
Frog Pond Update
Bit by bit the old pool is becoming the new pond. I’ve added more locations for plants, and added some new plants both inside and outside the pond itself. I’ve also moved the shade sail to provide much more shade (a tricky thing to do in itself as anchor points are hard to come by). The water is definitely going greener since I combined what was sitting in the tarp and what was below it. So that’s a small concern...
An Above Ground Pond?
I think I’ve inadvertently fallen over a new garden project. Yesterday I discovered the pool is teeming with tadpoles. Now I’m a big frog fan so the idea of converting the pool to a frog habitat quickly took hold. I’d already decided to get rid of the pool this summer and put up a much smaller (more manageable and appropriate for 1 person) one and had recently been dreading what to do with the old one. It comes up...
